June 30, 2017 | Cowgirl Equestrian
OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma State's Hannah Mitchell won the National Reining Horse Association collegiate reining championship today at the Oklahoma State Fair Grounds in Oklahoma City.
Mitchell and other collegiate riders competed in Jim Norick Arena for the championship. Mitchell rode to a score of 217.5 and was tied for first with Georgia's Julia Spreng, forcing a tiebreaker.
The two riders traded horses for the run-off, and Mitchell came out on top with a score of 222.5, edging Spreng's 220.5 score.
Today's title adds yet another accolade to Mitchell's incredible first year of collegiate riding. As a freshman for the Cowgirls, she was recently announced as the National Collegiate Equestrian Association Reining Rider of the Year to go along with her Big 12 Conference Reining Rider of the Year and first-team NCEA All-American honors.
This is the fourth time an OSU rider has won the NRHA Reining Championship under head coach Larry Sanchez. Also on that list is former OSU rider and current Cowgirl assistant coach Jenna Blumer, who helped coach Mitchell to today's victory in Oklahoma City.
