Cowgirls Bow Out of NCAA Individual Championships
May 25, 2017 | Cowgirl Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – Oklahoma State women's tennis senior Viktoriya Lushkova, and the Cowgirl doubles team of Carla Tur Mari and Vladica Babic came up short in their round of 32 matches at the NCAA Individual Championships on Thursday afternoon.
Lushkova bowed out in her round of 32 singles match, falling to No. 26 Kate Fahey, 6-3, 6-0, to put the wraps on an outstanding career.
Over the course of her four years in Stillwater, the Cowgirl senior racked up 98 career singles wins, which ranks first among Cowgirls in the Big 12 era and tied for seventh all-time. Her 91 career doubles wins rank ninth all-time. With her No. 8 seed in singles this season, Lushkova clinched her third singles All-America honor to become the third Cowgirl to achieve that feat.
Tur Mari and Babic close the season at 23-8 overall after falling to No. 40 Shannon Hudson and Giulia Pairone of Arkansas in their first-round match. The pair hung tough in the first set, but came up short, 7-5. Hudson and Pairone would take the second set, 6-1, to end the Cowgirls' season.
The loss closes the career of Tur Mari, who has been a spark plug on and off the court for the Pokes all four of her seasons in the orange and black. With 95 career doubles wins and 86 career doubles wins, Tur Mari is one of only four Cowgirls in the Big 12 era to rack up 80 wins in both singles and doubles. Her 95 doubles wins rank eighth in school history.
The Cowgirls posted a 25-6 overall record in 2017 and an 8-1 Big 12 mark to take their second-straight regular season conference title. With a win over No. 8 Georgia Tech in the Sweet 16 last week, they made their second-straight Elite Eight.
In 2018, head coach Chris Young and the Cowgirls plan to return five starters from the 2017 run.
