Shippy Named Academic All-American For Second-Straight Year
May 25, 2017 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER ----- Oklahoma State softball's Vanessa Shippy was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America first-team, it was announced today. This marks the second-consecutive year the Idaho native has been named an Academic All-American as she was selected to the third-team in 2016.
A junior, Shippy is just the third Cowgirl to be named an Academic All-American back-to-back years and the first to do so since Chelsea Garica in 2011 and 2012.
With the selection, Oklahoma State now has 10 Academic All-Americans in program history.
"It means everything to me to be recognized for hard work in the classroom," Shippy said. "It is easy to overlook all that students athletes do off the field. All of us athletes get to hangout in the academic center and surround ourselves with people who share the same goals as we do. Of course we want to be successful in our sport but we are here to get a degree. All of the people in the academic center (Amy Randolph, Marilyn Middlebrook, Mike Noteware, Jawauna Harding) they all work to help us in the classroom and prepare us for the working world after school."
Shippy is majoring in marketing and finance and earned a 3.94 GPA this past year.
Showing she can have success on and off the field, Shippy has been named to the Academic All-Big 12 team and an Academic All-American in 2016 and 2017. On the field Shippy was named to the All-Big 12 first-team and helped lead the Cowgirls to the NCAA Gainesville Regional championship.
"Our coaches play such a huge role in our team's academic success," she said. "Especially putting up with my crazy Finance schedule. They make sure to put academics first. Academics has always been a priority to me and thankfully God has blessed me academically and surrounded me with such amazing people here at Oklahoma State.
Before Shippy was honored in 2016, Oklahoma State previously hadn't had an Academic All-American since Garcia in 2012.
