Third Annual OSU Cowboy Celebrity Classic Set For May 22
May 11, 2017 | General
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State University elite coaches, celebrities, players and cancer survivors will team up to tee off at the Third Annual OSU Cowboy Celebrity Classic Golf Tournament on May 22 at the Stillwater Country Club to raise money for the American Cancer Society. In its three years, the tournament has raised over $125,000 for the OSU family battling all forms of adult and pediatric cancer.
The list of celebrities already features OSU coaches; Mike Gundy, Cowboy Football; Mike Boynton, Cowboy Basketball and Jim Littell, Cowgirl Basketball. Former OSU athletes on tap to play are: Mickey Tettleton, two-time MLB All-Star; Joey Graham, former NBA player and Cowboy All-American; Doug Tewell, two-time Champions Tour major winner; Jonathan Moore PGA Tour, Chris Tidland, PGA Tour and Web.Com Tour; Billy Bajema, Super Bowl Champion; Charlie Johnson, Super Bowl Champion and Mike Henneman, MLB All-Star. Guest personalities include: Bryndon Manzer, ESPN Analyst, John Holcomb, News On 6 Sports Director and Dave Hunziker, the Voice of the Cowboys, Cowboy Radio Network.
The day begins with a celebrity auction where tournament players bid for the opportunity to play golf with OSU coaches, sports announcers, personalities and former OSU players from a variety of sports.
"The celebrity auction is a lively and quite unpredictable event where golfers are trying to outbid each other for a chance to spend the day on the course with one of their favorite OSU celebrities," OSU Coaches vs. Cancer spokesperson Dave Hunziker said. "The day brought in a record $75,000 in 2016, money that goes straight towards finding new treatments and perhaps a cure for cancer. We are honored so many former OSU sports figures, who have gone on to success in the pros, are willing to come back home to support this event."
The annual tournament is the largest fundraising event for the OSU Coaches vs. Cancer program.
The tournament was an idea generated by OSU supporter Matt Allen who at the time was battling brain cancer. He did not live to see the first tournament, but his dream lives on through his Coaches vs Cancer friends and family and each year two people are awarded the Matt Allen Superman Awards. One is given in memory of someone who courageously fought against cancer and a second to honor a cancer survivor. The first award given in 2015 was to the Allen family. Last year's recipients were the Naple family of Stillwater in memory of Cowboy football video coordinator Jeff "Pitt" Naple and the other to cancer survivor Roy Bays, a former PGA professional and OSU golfer from Stillwater.
This year, will be the second for the $1-million hole-in-one competition sponsored by Janzen's Toyota of Stillwater. Before the shotgun start the names of two golfers are drawn with a chance to win a million dollars.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. OSU's multi-sport Coaches vs. Cancer program is one of the most successful in the nation.
"Celebrities are still agreeing to play, we are still accepting teams and sponsorships for tournament," Hunziker said.
