Cowgirls Close West Coast Trip with Qualifying Marks
April 01, 2017 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
PALO ALTO, Calif. – The 800-meter run took center stage at the final day of the Stanford Invitational, and Savannah Camacho and Kaylee Dodd earned regional qualifying times in the event.
Camacho was the fourth-best finisher in the event with her time of 2:05.63 from the fastest heat of the day. As the second-best collegiate mark of the day, Camacho moves to No. 2 in the west region.
"The women ran better today," coach Dave Smith said. "They were all coming off of doubles, it was kind of windy, there were no rabbits, but they looked better today and we're going to assess what's next for them in the next few weeks."
The time is a tenth of a second faster than her qualifying time from 2016 that was the 17th-best 800-meter mark heading into the regional where she advanced to the NCAA semifinal in Eugene, Oregon.
After her first NCAA Championship experience from mid-March, Dodd ran a 2:07.36 and finished as the No. 6 collegiate woman in the 800 Saturday in Palo Alto.
The time was more than two seconds off her personal best, but should send the Cowgirl junior to her second-straight west regional.
"Kaylee, Abbie and Savannah should all be in for the 800 and the 1,500, so we're not sure what to do, yet," Smith said. "The men were phenomenal yesterday and the women were good today, so I'd say it was a successful weekend."
Sophomore Kaytlyn Larson won the opening heat of the 800 in 2:09.95 and finished 23rd overall.
The Cowgirls now have the six fastest 800-meter times in the Big 12 this season.
Up next for OSU is a visit to Tucson, Arizona, for the Jim Click Shootout hosted by the University of Arizona and named for former OSU Cowboy football captain Jim Click.
