Cowgirls Blow By Evansville In Historic Night
March 07, 2017 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER, Okla. ---- Oklahoma State Softball beat Evansville 21-2 in five innings Tuesday in a historic night at Cowgirl Stadium. The Cowgirls tied the school record for runs and walks, while breaking the record for RBIs in a single-game.
All 16 available batters went to the plate for the Cowgirls, while 10 had at least a hit in the game. Shea Coats earned her second-consecutive win in the circle going five innings allowing just four hits and striking out eight. She has now struck out 17 batters in her last 11.1 innings of work.
"We set or tied a bunch of record for OSU, which is cool," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I think it's a dream for me to get everybody in and to get multiple at-bats. I think the story here is Shea Coats. That's two good outings now in a row. 17 strikeouts and no walks the last two is something we haven't had in my time here. She's starting to feel good about herself and that's helping us. Games like this you can have some kids who can get a little anxious and get themselves out. I thought our kids held true to their plan and walked 11 times and did what they had to do. Overall it's a nice day."
Oklahoma State (13-9) fell behind early after Evansville jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the second. The Cowgirls responded well with seven runs in the bottom of the third capped off with an RBI triple from Randee O'Donnell that scored two and a two-out, grand slam from Kristin Reasnor six batters later to take a 7-1 lead after two innings.
From there, OSU scored three more in the bottom of the third to extend its lead 10-1.
The historic night was thanks in large part to the bottom of the fourth, when the Cowgirls scored a season-high 11 runs in the inning. The scoring effort came with RBIs from Madi Sue Montgomery, Jessi Haffner, Taylor Pence, Jamie Lowrie, Mallory Goodman and Lauren Mason.
On the night, Goodman and Mason had their first hits of the season while Lowrie had her first RBI of the year.
As a team, the Cowgirls scored 11 runs with two outs on its way to 21 RBIs and 11 walks.
With the win, Coats moved to 2-2 on the year.
The 21 runs ties for the most runs scored by a Big 12 team this year. The last time OSU scored 21 runs in a game was April 2, 2000, against Baylor in Stillwater.
At the plate, Reasnor who went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored. Montgomery also shined at the plate going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
