Cowboys Come Up Short At TCU
March 25, 2017 | Cowboy Baseball
FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma State rallied to erase an early deficit but couldn't hold on to its lead Saturday night as the 16th-ranked Cowboys suffered a 6-5 loss to No. 3 TCU at Lupton Stadium.
The loss drops OSU to 15-8 on the season and 0-2 in Big 12 Conference play and marks the Cowboys' first series loss to TCU (16-5, 4-1) since 2013.
The Horned Frogs scored the decisive run on an RBI single by Evan Skoug with two outs in the seventh inning as Cole Hearrean took the loss for OSU.
Offensively, the two teams matched each other in hits for the second-straight game as both tallied seven apiece. Ryan Cash led the Pokes with a 3-for-5 night, while Jon Littell and Cade Cabbiness both drove in two runs.
TCU took the game's initial lead in the third inning against OSU starter Jonathan Heasley. Following a double by Austen Wade, an RBI single by Cam Warner put the Frogs up, 1-0. The home team wasn't done as they added three more runs, two of them unearned on a pair of OSU throwing errors, to take a four-run advantage after three frames.
The Cowboys still trailed 4-0 after five innings, but that changed in a big way in the sixth as OSU rallied to take the lead with a five-run outburst.
Cash got things started with a single, and after Garrett Benge walked, Garrett McCain was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Up next, Jon Littell cut OSU's deficit in half with a two-RBI single to make the score 4-2.
The bases remained loaded later in the inning for pinch hitter Cade Cabbiness, who ripped a triple to the right-center field gap that brought home a pair of runs and tied the score.
The go-ahead run was thrown out at the plate on Cabbiness' triple, but the game did not remain tied long as an error by TCU first baseman Luken Baker on a grounder off the bat of Colin Simpson allowed Cabbiness to score the go-ahead run.
OSU took the 5-4 lead into the bottom of the inning, but it would not hold up. Baker led off the inning with a single, and Josh Watson then lifted a fly ball to deep right field that Cabbiness dropped for an error. After an RBI groundout tied the game, Hearrean escaped further damage when he snared a line drive and tossed to third base an inning-ending double play.
The Cowboys would leave runners stranded in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, and OSU brought the go-ahead run to the plate twice in the ninth following a single by Cash before TCU closer Durbin Feltman struck out Benge and got McCain to fly out to the warning track in right field to secure his sixth save.
The two teams conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
