March 26, 2017 | Cowboy Baseball
FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma State suffered a series sweep at the hands of No. 3 TCU Sunday as the 16th-ranked Cowboys dropped the finale by a 5-1 count at Lupton Stadium.
Â
The loss drops OSU to 15-9 on the season and 0-3 in Big 12 Conference play, while TCU improved to 17-5 and 5-1 in the league.
Â
OSU managed just six hits in the loss, with Dustin Williams and Cade Cabbiness collecting two apiece. Starter Blake Battenfield took the loss, allowing four runs, three of them earned, on eight hits in five innings of work.
Â
The Horned Frogs took a lead in their first at bat, getting a two-out RBI single by Luken Baker to go up 1-0.
Â
In the third, OSU plated its lone run when Williams blooped a single to center field, allowing Andrew Rosa, who was running on the pitch, to come all the way around to score the tying run.
Â
However, TCU answered with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning when Cam Warner led off with an opposite-field home run to right to put the home team up, 2-1.
Â
The Frogs would score single runs in each of the next three innings to take a four-run advantage while OSU struggled against TCU starter Brian Howard, who struck out nine in seven innings to improve to 3-2 on the year.
Â
OSU opened the ninth with back-to-back singles by Ryan Sluder and Cabbiness to put the tying run on deck, but Jake Eissler came out of the bullpen and retired three-straight Cowboys to end the rally and pick up a save.
Â
OSU returns to midweek action Tuesday night when the Cowboys host Wichita State at Reynolds Stadium.
