STILLWATER – The seventh-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team continued Big 12 play on Friday with a 4-0 victory over No. 30 Texas at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
Oklahoma State (14-3; 2-0 Big 12) has now won 16-straight regular season conference matches dating back to March 29, 2015. Friday's win is also the eighth time this season that Cowgirls have swept their opposition.
"I thought our girls handled adversity well today," head coach Chris Young said. "Every match was a challenge, but I thought our girls were in control of their matches and I liked the way we competed. Texas is a quality team and we knew that they were going to compete.
"We know we're going to get everybody's best shot, but that's the responsibility of being the defending conference champions and NCAA runner-up."
The Cowgirls once again started off quickly, as they claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and two.
Aliona Bolsova and Katarina Stresnakova, competing on court two, were the first to claim victory on Friday, as the Cowgirl tandem picked up a 6-4 win over Neda Korpcina and Anna Turati. Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic, ranked No. 17 in the nation, then proceeded to seal the Cowgirls' 15th doubles point of the season with a 6-3 win over Texas' Petra Granic and Dani Wagland.
"I thought our doubles looked really sharp with the combinations that we had to put out there," Young said. "We thought it was a good opportunity to mix some things up. We had six healthy bodies to put out there and those six girls went out there and did a great job."
Oklahoma State continued its form in the ensuing singles action, picking up wins on courts one, three and six to secure the squad's 14th win of the season.
Sofia Blanco was the first Cowgirl to secure a point on Friday, as she dropped Texas' Dani Wagland in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Blanco's match was the only singles contest to be decided in straight sets, with the remaining five courts all entering a decisive third.
Of those matches that advanced into the third set, freshman Aliona Bolsova was the next Cowgirl to put a point on the board. The right-hander powered through the third set in her matchup against No. 63 Petra Granic en route to winning, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Bolsova's win was followed up by Viktoriya Lushkova's match-clinching victory on court one. Lushkova found herself down a break early in the first set, but battled back to pull level at 4-4 before dropping the set to Bianca Turati, who is ranked No. 26 in the nation. The senior found her rhythm again in the second set, however, and went on to win 12 of the final 15 games as she locked up the match for the Cowgirls.
"I thought that was a great win for Viki," Young said. "She lost to Turati in straight sets back in the fall when we were hosting that Futures tournament. I know she wanted to come back and get that win, and for that to be the one that clinched only made it better for the team."
Up next for OSU is a road trip to Lubbock, Texas where the Cowgirls will take part in a top-10 matchup against No. 7 Texas Tech on March 31 at 5 p.m.
