Cowgirls Knock Off No. 22 Ole Miss In Split Of Day

 OXFORD, Miss. ---- Oklahoma State Softball spilt a doubleheader Saturday against Bowling Green and No. 22 Ole Miss at the Ole Miss Classic. The Cowgirls beat Rebels, 5-1, but lost to BGSU, 3-2.Â

Brandi Needham (8-4) threw a complete game in the win over Ole Miss. Â Needham only gave up a run against the Rebels. The win snapped a 16-game winning streak for Ole Miss and was the Cowgirls' first win over a ranked opponent in 2017.Â

"Well the good thing for us is being able to bounce back after a first performance in the first game," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I told our team our back's are against the wall, we need to find a way to win this game and they responded. I thought Brandi set the tone and really competed. I thought our energy was really good. I was happy with the way they came out and played."

Oklahoma State (17-10) left no doubt in the win over Ole Miss. The Cowgirls scored four runs in the top of the second thanks to RBIs from Randee O'Donnell, Maddi Holcomb and Rylee Bayless to take a 4-0 lead.

Vanessa Shippy tagged up at third to score on a sac fly from Madi Sue Montgomery and extend the OSU lead to 5-0.Â

Ole Miss doubled down the right field line with one out in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 5-1 but it proved to be too little, too late.Â

Holcomb led the way at the plate for the Cowgirls going 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

The first game of the day was a hard-fought loss for OSU.

Bowling Green jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first before the Cowgirls responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to Bayless's RBI double to take a 2-1 lead.

The Falcons ultimately won the game in the top of the sixth with two runs to take the eventual 3-2 lead it wouldn't give up.Â

Bayless led the way at the plate for the Cowgirls going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Shea Coats (3-3) took the loss for the Cowgirls.
