STILLWATER – Oklahoma State women's tennis head coach Chris Young has announced the addition of Jaime Sánchez-Cañamares Rios to the staff as a volunteer assistant coach.
"I am excited to have Jaime join our staff this spring," Young said. "I have known him since he played for my alma mater. He has worked with some of the top pros and junior players in the world over the past couple years and he will bring those experiences to our program, which will be a benefit as we continue to help our players develop this season."
Rios was a collegiate standout during his time at Fresno Pacific, Oklahoma Christian and Embry-Riddle, posting a 70-14 mark in singles and a 70-24 doubles record on the way to four ITA/NAIA All-America honors, as well as the 2014 ITA/NAIA doubles championship. He also helped Fresno Pacific and Oklahoma Christian to NAIA titles in 2012 and 2013, respectively, while leading Embry-Riddle to national runner-up performances in 2014 and 2015.
Rios reached as high as No. 1 in the ITA/NAIA national doubles rankings, while also earning a career-high No. 13 ranking in singles. He also paired up with Embry-Riddle teammate Deni Zmak to claim the USTA/ITA Super Bowl doubles championship in 2014.
Impressive in the classroom as well, Rios posted a perfect 4.0 GPA as a student-athlete, leading to numerous academic awards, including NAIA Scholar Athlete, and ITA Academic All-American.
Prior to his time at the collegiate level, Rios spent nearly six years on the ATP and ITF pro circuits from 2004 to 2010, reaching as high as No. 81 in the Spanish national rankings.
Rios comes to Stillwater after spending two years as the "Elite Coach" at Saviano High Performance Tennis in Florida where he had experience coaching up a number of tennis pros, including standouts Sloane Stephens, Eugenie Bouchard, Samantha Crawford and Amanda Anisimova. He has also spent time coaching various juniors and professionals at Burning Tree Country Club, Bay Head Yacht Club, La Manga Club and Albacete Tennis Club.
A native of Albacete, Spain, Rios graduated from summa cum laude from Embry-Riddle in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in business administration, specializing in accounting and finance.
"I'm very excited," Rios said. "I think it's a great group of girls, and I'm excited about the season. It's going to be a great experience for all of us, and I'm hoping that I can help the team to another successful season."
