Oklahoma State Game Notes
The Basics
Oklahoma State (6-1, 0-0 Big 12) won its 14th straight non-conference home game and improved to 6-1 on the year with a 79-63 win over Austin Peay on Wednesday night. In Gallagher-Iba Arena this year, OSU has held each of its five opponents under 40 percent shooting from the floor and has an average scoring margin of +27.0. Now, the Cowboys welcome Mississippi Valley State to Stillwater. OSU is 2-0 all-time against the Delta Devils and 25-0 against teams from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
On the Air
The matchup between the Cowboys and Delta Devils will air on Fox Sports Oklahoma at 2 p.m. Central. Mike Wolfe, Bryndon Manzer and Allison Gappa will handle the on-air duties. FoxSportsGo will carry the webcast. As always, Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call.
Boynton Era Off To A Good Start
Should the Cowboys beat Mississippi Valley State on Sunday, OSU would be off to a 7-1 start to begin the 2017-18 season and the Mike Boynton era. That mark would tie Eddie Sutton (1990-91) for the second-best record after eight games by a new coach in program history. The only first-year coach to go undefeated in his first eight games was Sean Sutton in 2006-07.
Any Given Cowboy, Any Given Night
The Cowboys roster is full of interchangeable parts that offers options to head coach Mike Boynton. Through seven games, five different Cowboys have led OSU in scoring and six different players have led the team in rebounding. From the point to the paint, OSU has eight scholarship players between 6-3 and 6-7 and each of them plays multiple roles. Nine Cowboys average at least 6.6 points per game and six players average at least 4.9 rebounds per game, and none of them play more than 25.3 minutes.
Dizzy From Deep
Sophomore sharpshooter Thomas Dziagwa is an astonishing 23-of-41 (.561) from 3-point this year, which ranks fourth among all NCAA Division I players with at least 40 attempts (tops in the Big 12). Dziagwa is now 46-of-94 (.489) from 3-point over his career, and will qualify for the OSU career 3-point percentage record with his 50th make. The current record holder is Sean Sutton, who connected on 44.4 percent of his 3-pointers from 1990-92. For comparison's sake, Phil Forte III was a 39.5 percent shooter from 3-point and hit a school-record 329 (2.44 per game) from deep.
High-Pressure Defense
Oklahoma State's defensive pressure looks to speed up opponents and create turnovers and bad shots, and through seven games it seems to be working. OSU forces 15.9 turnovers per game, including a season-high 20 against Austin Peay, and ranks 36th nationally by giving up just 62.3 points per game. On the perimeter, OSU is allowing just 27.9 percent shooting from 3-point, which ranks 28th nationally.
The Series Between OSU and MVSU
This is just the third meeting between Oklahoma State and Mississippi Valley State, and the first since a Nov. 8, 2013 matchup in GIA. The Cowboys are 2-0 against the Delta Devils, although the first meeting back in 1996 was a tight one. Alex Webber scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to give OSU a 77-74 win, but the Cowboys turned the ball over 23 times to keep MVSU in the game. OSU shot 50.9 percent from the floor that day.
Delta Devils Are Road Warriors
MVSU has yet to play a home game this season, and isn't slated to do so until their SWAC opener on Jan. 1, 2018 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. That's a total of 13 games away from Itta Bena, Miss., prior to playing at home. So far this year, MVSU has traveled 6,322 miles, including their trip to Stillwater. Dating back to last season, the Delta Devils are riding an eight-game losing streak, including an 0-7 start in 2017-18.
Behind The MVSU 0-7 Start
MVSU has struggled out of the gate, especially on the offensive end. The Delta Devils average 57.9 points per game, which ranks 350th of the 351 teams nationwide. Only Coppin State (54.0) scores fewer points per game than MVSU, which has yet to score more than 70 points in a game. They also rank 343rd in field goal percentage (37.5 percent) and 332nd in rebounding (30.7).
Against The SWAC
The Cowboys are a perfect 25-0 all-time against current members of the SWAC. The Delta Devils are the only team from the SWAC the Cowboys are slated to face in 2017-18.
