In the Rankings
Oklahoma State is ranked No. 12 in the Associated Press poll and No. 15 in the Amway Coaches Poll. The Cowboys have been ranked in the top 15 of both polls since week 12 of the 2016 season. Including this season, OSU has reached the top 15 of the A.P. poll at some point in nine of the past 10 seasons and the top 10 of the A.P. poll in eight of the last 10 seasons. This week's game against Iowa State marks the 93rd time in the Cowboys' last 124 games that OSU has been ranked by the A.P. entering a game. Iowa State enters the game ranked No. 24 by the AP and No. 23 in the coaches poll. OSU debuted at No. 11 last week in the first College Football Playoff rankings of 2017, and this week's will be released on Tuesday evening. The Cowboys are one of only four teams to be ranked in every set of CFP rankings since the beginning of 2015, joining Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State.
The Series
Saturday's game marks the 52nd meeting between the Cowboys and the Cyclones all-time, and the seventh consecutive year the teams have met. Oklahoma State leads the series, 30-18-3, and also holds a 13-12-1 advantage in Ames. OSU has won the last five meetings and seven of the last eight. The Cowboys have won three of the last four in Jack Trice Stadium. OSU won last year's meeting, 38-31, in Stillwater, and won the last game in Ames, 35-31, in 2015. Mike Gundy holds a 7-2 record against Iowa State, while Matt Campbell is 0-1 against Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma State From a Distance
Oklahoma State is 7-2 on the year and enters Saturday's game as one of just two teams in the nation - and the only Power Five team - with a 5-0 record on the road this season. OSU possesses the nation's No. 2 offense in both yardage per game (579.4) and points per game (45.3), as well as the No. 3 passing offense (379.2) in college football. Quarterback Mason Rudolph leads the nation in passing yards, passing yards per game and points responsible for, and is among the national leaders in every important passing statistic. He's thrown for more than 300 yards in eight of his last 10 games and recently broke Mike Gundy's OSU record for wins as a starting QB. Rudolph's top target James Washington leads the nation with 125.9 receiving yards per game and he's hit the 100-yard mark in five of his last seven games. On top of that, running back Justice Hill is the Big 12's leading rusher and No. 14 nationally with 1,064 yards, and he's hit 100 yards in five of his last six games, including a career-best 228-yard outing last week. With Rudolph, Hill and Washington, Oklahoma State is the only team in the nation with a 3,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver this season. The Cowboy defense has also had its moments this season. OSU held WVU to its lowest offensive output of the season and became the only team to hold QB Will Grier to less than 300 passing yards all year. The Cowboys have forced 19 turnovers this year to lead the league and rank 15th in in the country.
Iowa State From a Distance
Iowa State enters Saturday's game with a 6-3 record that includes two wins over opponents ranked in top four of the AP poll. The Cyclones defeated then-No. 3 Oklahoma on the road, 38-31, to start a four-game win streak that culminated with a 14-7 win over then-No. 4 TCU. Both of those games mark the only losses for either team this season. The streak nearly continued last week at West Virginia, but ISU was unable to overcome a 20-0 deficit and fell, 20-16. Senior quarterback Kyle Kempt has led the unexpected charge for the Cyclones, earning his first career start at Oklahoma and leading the ISU offense since then. In five games this year, he is 4-1 and has thrown for 1,108 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions with a 66.9 completion percentage. His top target is 6-5 senior receiver Allen Lazard, who has 44 catches for 526 and six touchdowns this year. Some of the biggest keys to the Cyclones' success this year has come from winning the turnover battle, as they rank among the top 10 nationally with a 1.11 turnover margin and avoiding penalties as they rank No. 3 in FBS with just 3.78 penalties per game.
