Cowgirl Soccer Coaches Honored As Regional Staff Of Year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Oklahoma State Cowgirl coaching staff has been named the 2017 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's South Region Staff of the Year, it was announced today.
The current United Soccer Coaches South Region includes the programs from Conference USA and the Ohio Valley, Southland, Sun Belt and Southwestern Athletic conferences as well as independents Hampton and South Carolina State.
Along with 13th-year head coach Colin Carmichael, associate head coach Justin Elkington, assistant coach Karen Hancock, volunteer assistant Michael O'Hare and strength & conditioning coach Mallory Fowlkes helped the Cowgirls achieve an impressive level of success on the pitch in 2017.
OSU finished its 2017 season with a 16-4-3 record, and the Cowgirls claimed a Big 12 Conference regular season championship with an 8-1-0 mark in league play. The squad also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship for the first time in six years.
OSU's 16 wins were the fifth most in program history and most by the Cowgirls since the 2011 team set a program record with 22. The Cowgirls finished 9-0-1 on their home field, marking just the sixth time in program history OSU has finished a season unbeaten at home. OSU's lone losses on the year were to nationally ranked California, West Virginia and Duke, all on the road, and a neutral site setback against Baylor in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship.
Picked to finish sixth in the league standings in a preseason vote of the Big 12's head coaches, OSU instead tied a program record with eight conference wins and captured a Big 12 crown by outscoring its opponents 16-5 and recording four shutouts in league play.
OSU entered the national rankings on Aug. 29, marking the Cowgirls first appearance in the national polls since 2012, and the Cowgirls maintained a spot in the rankings for 12 consecutive weeks.
Throughout the 2017 season, OSU ranked among the NCAA leaders in scoring, and it currently leads the Big 12 with 45 goals and 127 points. The Cowgirls also produced the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year as Haley Woodard took home that honor and also joined Anna Beffer on the All-Big 12 First Team to give the Cowgirls two first-team all-conference performers for the first time since 2011.
The OSU coaching staff will be honored along with the other Regional Staff of the Year winners at the College Coaches Awards Reception in Philadelphia on Jan. 18, 2018. The Regional Staff of the Year recipients will be placed on the ballot for National Coach of the Year consideration, with the winner of that award being announced on Dec. 19.
