STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team picked up its second win of the fall season Friday, as the Cowgirls overpowered Southern Nazarene, 27-1, at Cowgirl Stadium.
"We played very clean," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I told our team that the one on the scoreboard is the most important thing. Southern Nazarene has some athletic kids that made us have to make a couple of nice plays and we did that. I told our team that if we can pitch like that and compete in the strike zone, we have a chance to be a solid team."
Sydney Pennington was the primary driving force behind OSU's (2-0) offensive eruption Friday, as she went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two runs batted in. The Sand Springs, Oklahoma native has now compiled four hits through the first two games of fall action.
"I just tried to stay relaxed more in this game," Pennington said. "My approach to this game was to stay relaxed and just get my best pitch while I was at the plate. I really tried to execute not moving my hands as much and just tried to swing at the right pitches."
Oklahoma State's offensive onslaught began early Friday when senior Jessi Haffner laced a ball over the left-field fence for a grand slam, giving the Cowgirls an early 4-0 edge. From there, eight more runs were tacked on by the Cowgirls over the next two frames to bust the game wide open.
Five Cowgirls recorded multi-hit games Friday night, with Pennington's tally of three hits leading the pack. There were also eight Cowgirls, including Pennington and Haffner, that drove in multiple runs against SNU. OSU electricty carried over to the basepaths as well, with five players combining to steal eight bases during the game. Three of those Cowgirls (Maddi Holcomb, Chelsea Alexander and Rylee Bayless) recorded multiple stolen bases.
In the circle, Oklahoma State got an all-around performance from its pitching staff, as four Cowgirls combined to surrender just three hits over 10 innings of work. Transfer Kendal Judge led the way Friday, earning her first win of the fall after tossing four innings of one-run softball.
OSU will continue its fall season next with a pair of games against Seminole State on Wednesday, Oct. 11, and against Cowley County on Thursday, Oct. 12. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. for both matchups.
