Cowgirls Sweep MOPs in Loss at SMU

DALLAS, TX – The No. 4 Oklahoma State Equestrian team swept the MOP honors in its 11-9 loss to No. 5 SMU on Saturday at the Dallas Equestrian Center.
The two teams started off with Equitation Over Fences and SMU (3-0) took the event with a score of 4-1. The lone win for the Cowgirls (1-1) came from Abigail Brayman. Brayman, making her Cowgirl debut, also earned MOP honors with her score of 88 over Brett Burlinton's 79.
The Mustangs would go on to take Reining with a score of 3-2. Julia Purus was the MOP recipient for her winning score of 69 against Madison Steed's 67.5. Stephanie Helsen would get the other win for the Cowgirls for her second win of the year.
The Cowgirls would attempt their comeback during Horsemanship. They took Horsemanship 4-1, with Kirsten Chamberland, Libby Collins, Harley Huff and Paige Kemper earning points.
For the second straight week, Huff earned MOP honors with her 75-70 win over Kara Vickery.
It would come down to Equitation on the Flat, and the Cowgirls would fall one victory short to tying it up. They lost Equitation on the Flat 3-2. Carly Barrick and Mia Bray earned points for the Cowgirls with Barrick receiving MOP honors with her 78-69 win over Ransome Rombauer.
"We had some great rides today against a very good SMU team," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "We plan to continue to work hard each and every day."
The Mustangs had a 7-3 lead heading into the half, but the Cowgirls refused to give up. They fought hard in Horsemanship and Equitation on the Flat, even bringing the score to within one point.
The meet was close until the end. Both teams finished with the same overall score with 1,466 points.
Up next, the Cowgirls will travel to Columbia, South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks on Oct. 27.
