STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball pushed its record to 5-0 this fall with a 14-0 victory over Connors State on Wednesday at Cowgirl Stadium.
"I thought it was a pretty good game here today," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Obviously, we pitched really well. I thought that Emmie Robertson was really good again. She just continues to mow through teams, and it's fun to watch her. We've got some young kids that are starting to put together some good at-bats as well and I'm excited about the way we're playing defense too."
OSU jumped on Connors State right away, scoring six runs in the first inning and another four in the second to jump out to 10-0 lead.
Maddi Holcomb and Taylor Lynch both singled to open the game and then advanced to second and third, respectively, on a passed ball. From there, Vanessa Shippy grounded out to short, but Holcomb crossed home plate to score the game's first run. Lynch followed shortly thereafter, scoring on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 in favor of the Cowgirls.
Later in the inning, Michaela Richbourg capped off OSU's impressive first inning when she smacked a three-run home run over the left-center field wall to make it 6-0. The home run marked Richbourg's first during her freshman season at OSU.
"I've been struggling with getting solid at-bats recently, so it felt really good to get that home run," Richbourg said. "Going up to the plate in my last three at-bats, I told myself "OK, I can relax and just swing like you know you can.""
The second inning mirrored the first inning right away, as Holcomb and Lynch again reached base to open the frame. After Holcomb scored on another Shippy groundout, it was Rylee Bayless who blasted OSU's second home run of the game, this one a three-run shot, over the centerfield wall to push the Cowgirls' lead to 10-0.
In the circle, Emmie Robertson continued to dominate for the Cowgirls, striking out nine in five shutout innings of work. Robertson (3-0) has not allowed a run and tallied 27 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched so far this fall.
"Jeff (Cottrill) does a great job calling pitches and whether Mackenzie Thomas or Raquel Dominguez is behind the plate, they do such a good job of helping me out with the frames and everything," Robertson said. "They help keep my confidence flowing and knowing that when batters do make contact, my defense has my back. That lets me pitch more freely and just have fun with it."
Whitney Whitehorn and Logan Simunek followed Robertson with five shutout innings of their own to wrap up the Cowgirls' second shutout of the fall season thus far.
Oklahoma State will continue its fall slate this Friday when the Cowgirls hit the road for a doubleheader against Arkansas. First pitch in Fayetteville is set for 4 p.m. with both games scheduled to be seven-inning contests.
