Cowgirls Knock Off Cowley in Stillwater, 10-2

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team picked up its fourth-consecutive win to open the fall season Thursday, as the Cowgirls defeated Cowley, 10-2, at Cowgirl Stadium.
"Our pitching was really bright again," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I thought our kids threw the ball well. They continue to get better each day and our defense was pretty good again as well."
Once again, the OSU (4-0) pitching staff dominated throughout, as the Cowgirls held the Tigers scoreless for the first nine innings of the contest. Cowley managed to score two runners in the top of the 10th however, ending Oklahoma State's consecutive scoreless innings pitched streak at 28 innings.
Starter Logan Simunek carried the early load Thursday, allowing just three hits through the first four innings. Simunek has surrendered just three runs in 12 innings pitched so far this fall.
"We've all definitely been working hard," Simunek said. "Everything we've been doing in practice has been showing out on the field, and that's why we've been so successful. Jeff (Cottrill) has helped us out a ton, and we're really happy to have him helping us out."
Following Simunek, senior transfer Emmie Robertson made her fourth appearance of the fall. She continued to be a force in the circle for OSU, as she recorded seven strikeouts over three innings of one-hit softball.
Robertson struck out 13 batters total in six innings of work during OSU's contests this week. The Lamar, Missouri native also earned her second win of the fall, as the Cowgirls took their first lead of the game with a four-run fifth inning.
In that frame, Maddi Holcomb continue her hot start to the fall as she opened the scoring with a two-run triple to right. From there, Taylor Lynch brought Holcomb around to score and Vanessa Shippy capped off the rally with a single up the middle to score Lynch.
Oklahoma State tacked on to its lead in the bottom of the ninth inning when Sydney Pennington hit a home run over the centerfield wall. Pennington finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate, and she now leads the Cowgirls with 10 hits so far this fall.
"It felt really good to hit my first home run," Pennington said. "I think I've been trying to hit a home run in every at-bat, but in that at-bat, I didn't think about anything and that's when it came."
After Cowley got on the board in the top half of the 10th inning, OSU pushed four more runs across the plate in the game's final frame to make it a 10-9 victory for the Cowgirls.
Oklahoma State will return to action next Wednesday, Oct. 18, for a make-up game against Connors State at Cowgirl Stadium. First pitch is schedule for 6 p.m.
