LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Seven members of the Oklahoma State softball program were honored Tuesday as National Fastpich Coaches Association Scholar-Athletes for their academic success during the 2016-17 season.
Christina Biggerstaff, Jessi Haffner, Lauren Heintzelman, Maddi Holcomb, Jamie Lowrie, Vanessa Shippy and Whitney Whitehorn were the seven Cowgirls honored by the NFCA. Five of them (Biggerstaff, Haffner, Holcomb, Shippy and Whitehorn) were also named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team earlier this year.
Vanessa Shippy has been a standout of academic success in her time at OSU, as she also collected her second Academic All-America and Academic All-District honors last season. She is the only player in Oklahoma State history to earn both Academic All-America and All-America honors on multiple occasions.
The NFCA Scholar-Athlete award is recognized by the NCAA (Div. I-III), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and junior colleges, as well at the high school level. In total, 7,365 softball players earned NFCA Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2016-17 season. Division I led the way with 1,843 athletes making the list.Â
