Cowgirl Tennis Tabbed for College MatchDay Appearance
January 20, 2017 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – The fifth-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team's matchup with No. 4 Stanford on Feb. 17 will be one of six matches broadcast live on ESPN3 as part of the United States Tennis Association's College MatchDay program, the organization announced Friday. The showdown between the Cowgirls and the Cardinal is a rematch of the 2016 NCAA Championship match, and will take place at the USTA National Campus at Lake Nona in Orlando, Fla.
Â
"We're so excited for fans to be able to see the passion, tradition and talent on display during a collegiate team match with the College MatchDay series," said USTA Collegiate Tennis Director Stephen Amritraj. "This is the most underrated property in tennis, and we're excited to have these 'bowl games' of college tennis as a way to increase its visibility."
Â
"College tennis is one of the four pillars on which the USTA National Campus was built," said Tim Cass, General Manager, USTA National Campus. "Helping to grow the popularity of the game at the collegiate level is incredibly important to us, and so we're eager to use the National Campus as a platform for some of the nation's strongest programs and players."
Â
Talent such as Patrick McEnroe, former Wimbledon finalist MaliVai Washington, Prim Siripipat and Kevin Corke will call the action live on the broadcasts.
Â
The Cowgirls are familiar with College MatchDay, as the team has hosted the program in two of the last three years. During its first year on the air in 2014, the MatchDay crew traveled to Stillwater for a Bedlam match inside the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center. Fans around the country were treated to an epic match in which then-freshman Viktoriya Lushkova defeated senior Whitney Ritchie in a thrilling three-set match to seal up the victory for the Cowgirls. The program was also in Stillwater last season to cover the Cowgirls' conference victory over TCU that would lock up a share of the Big 12 title for Oklahoma State.
Â
Admission is free for each College MatchDay at the USTA National Campus, which will feature a free kids clinic, live music, specialty food and drinks, games and giveaways. The National Campus features the first off-campus stadium built specifically for college tennis. For more information, visit:Â www.ustanationalcampus.com.
