STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's wrestling team earned the top spot in WIN Magazine's 2016-17 Preseason Tournament Power Index, the publication announced Thursday afternoon.
Â
With eight returning wrestlers that rank in the top eight in their weight class, the Cowboys earned a TPI ranking of 87.5, besting second-place Virginia Tech's 84. The TPI is based on the schools' wrestlers who are rated in WIN's individual rankings, predicting possible All-American candidates in the 2017 NCAA Championships, which will be held March 16-18 in St. Louis, Mo.
Â
Returning ranked Cowboys include defending 141-pound national champion Dean Heil, along with 2016 All-Americans Anthony Collica (149), Joe Smith (157) and Nolan Boyd (184). Also included are Kaid Brock (133), Kyle Crutchmer (174)
Â
Followed by No. 2 Virginia Tech, Iowa (77), Ohio State (72.5) and Missouri (64.5) round out the rankings' top five.
Â
The Cowboys are coming off a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships in 2016, where six Pokes earned All-American honors, with Heil and former Cowboy Alex Dieringer picking up individual championships. Oklahoma State enters the 2016-17 season in search of its 35th team title.
Â
The Cowboys released the schedule for the upcoming campaign earlier this week, and will open up the season with Bucknell on Nov. 6 in Miami, Okla.
