Woodard’s Golden Goal Lifts Cowgirls In Austin
September 30, 2016 | Cowgirl Soccer
AUSTIN, Texas – Oklahoma State knocked off Texas, 2-1, in double overtime Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium as Haley Woodard's golden goal in the 104th minute gave the Cowgirls their first Big 12 Conference win of the season.
The win was OSU's first in five overtime matches this season as the Cowgirls improved to 6-5-2 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play. UT is now 6-5-1 and 0-2-1 in the league.
Friday's match saw both of OSU's top scorers, Woodard and Courtney Dike, find the back of the net as Dike recorded her Big 12-best seventh goal of the year with Woodard notching her fifth.
Neither team could manage a score in an even opening half, with UT owning a slim 6-4 advantage in shots and both squads posting three shots on goal.
OSU's best first-half opportunity came in the 40th minute when Dike sent a pass ahead to Woodard, who fired a low shot on the ground towards the far post that UT goalie Paige Brown dove to deflect away.
The Longhorns struck first after intermission, going up 1-0 in the 62nd minute when on one of its 16 corner kicks in the match, Emma Jett delivered a ball into the box that Kayra Dollas headed to the near post.
OSU wasn't down for long, however, as less than nine minutes later, Dike made it 1-1. On a free kick from 35-yards out from the right side, Niki McKnight booted a beautiful ball that glanced off the far post and onto the goal line, where Dike was there to finish it off for the equalizer.
In the 78th minute, a stellar effort by Michela Ongaro kept the tie intact as the OSU goalie made one of her seven saves in the match, leaping and sending a blast by Cyera Hintzen over the crossbar.
After regulation ended still tied 1-1, the first overtime also passed with neither team producing the game winner.
But just 3:08 into the second extra period, OSU was able to celebrate when Anna Beffer sent a perfect ball from the top of the box towards a streaking Woodard, who beat the UT defenders and slotted an eight-yard shot past Brown to the near post for the game winner.
OSU returns to action next weekend with trips to Texas Tech and Kansas.
