Three Cowgirls Advance to Second Round of Qualifying at Stillwater Pro Tennis Classic

STILLWATER – Three members of the Oklahoma State tennis team picked up wins in the first round of qualifying at the Stillwater Pro Tennis Classic on Sunday to advance to Monday's second round.

Senior Carla Tur Mari and freshman Lena Ruppert were the first Cowgirls to pick up wins Sunday morning. Tur Mari handled South Africa's Katie Poluta, 6-2, 6-4 to open the week. In her first competitive match inside the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center, Ruppert earned a straight-set victory as well over Emily Ory of the United States.

Sophomore Katarina Stresnakova defeated current Texas Longhorn Daniella Roldan, 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the second round of qualifying.

Former Cowgirl Kelsey Laurene handled Alena Sergeychik of Russia, 6-1, 6-1. Another former Cowgirl, Alisa Buslayeva, competed Sunday as well, but came up short to Victoria Flores, 6-4, 6-3.

Freshman Aliona Bolsova came up short in a tight match to American Maria Shishkina in her first match in Stillwater. After taking the first set, Bolsova fell behind, 5-0, in the second before rallying back to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Spanish freshman would come up short in the set and the match, however, dropping a three-set decision, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Sophomore Sofia Blanco fell, 6-3, 6-2, to Russia's Sofya Zhuk in her first-round match.

The second round of qualifying is set to get underway Monday morning at 9:30. Monday will also mark the beginning of doubles play.
