Cowboy Cross Country Joins Cowgirls in Top-10
September 13, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
Both squads still lead Midwest region rankings
NEW ORLEANS – The Oklahoma State cross country program saw both of its teams earn top-10 places in the first regular season United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll, with the men's squad moving up one spot to 10, and the Cowgirls coming in at 8.
With just one competition under their belts, the Cowboys are back in the top-10 after debuting in the preseason poll at 11.
The top-ranked squad in the Midwest region swapped places with Great Lakes powerhouse Wisconsin in the week one poll, and the Cowboys still sit atop the Big 12 with No. 19 Oklahoma as the only other conference foe in the top-30, though Texas and Iowa State still received votes.
The Cowboys went 5-0 in their first meet of the 2016 season, sweeping the Cowboy Duals against No. 6 Arkansas, OU, No. 26 Tulsa, Wichita State and Oral Roberts thanks to Josh Thompson, Christian Liddell and Luis Martinez finishing first through third.
The Cowgirls held steady at 8 after opening up with a 3-2 dual meet record at the Cowboy Duals.
Savannah Camacho was OSU's highest finisher in fourth, and Natalie Baker, Anna Boyert and Jennifer Celis finished in the top-15.
In the Big 12, OSU still remains the highest-ranked team, with historic favorite Iowa State in 17, and up-and-coming Kansas at 24. Texas and Baylor each received votes.
Both cross country squads will return to action on Sept. 24 at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
