Cowgirls Win Two To Advance To Regional Final
May 21, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
ATHENS, Ga. -- Oklahoma State softball advanced to the regional final Saturday with a pair of wins over Maine and Northwestern at Jack Turner Stadium.
The Cowgirls defeated Maine 10-1 in the first game, and followed it with a 3-2 victory over Northwestern in extra innings to advance to the final.
Oklahoma State will take on Georgia Sunday at noon (CT), and will try to force the what-if game with a win.
Sophomore Randee O'Donnell executed with an RBI-squeeze bunt in the top of the ninth to secure the win against the Wildcats.
"It's big. It was a big day for us," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "We needed this. I think the best thing, I was just happy for these kids because they've worked so hard. They've done everything that they need to be good people, and to top it off to be great athletes. It's just a lot of fun."
Oklahoma State (31-25) started the game against Northwestern as well as it could have hoped.
Junior Shea Coats held the Wildcats scoreless through three innings before freshman Madi Sue Montgomery singled to bring home sophomore Maddi Holcomb and give the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead.
Northwestern responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1.
After a scoreless fifth inning for both teams, Holcomb scored on a fielder's choice to give the Cowgirls a 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats again responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Both teams held each other scoreless the next two innings before the eventual winning run by Oklahoma State in the ninth.
Senior Kacy Freeze (18-10) came on in relief in the seventh to earn the win. Freeze closed out the final three innings of action, allowing just one hit.
"It's awesome," Freeze said. "After the first game I went in the huddle and I said 'Guys, we're not walking away from here crying.' We did. We're crying because we're happy. That's good for our seniors to get another shot tomorrow to come out and prove everyone wrong."
The first game was all about the offense for the Cowgirls.
Oklahoma State started the scoring in the third with four runs thanks to an RBI single from Montgomery and a home run by senior Tiffany Mikkelson.
The Cowgirls added three more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 7-0.
Maine responded with a run in the bottom half to make it 7-1 after four.
Oklahoma State scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to secure the eventual 10-1 win.
Freeze earned the win for the Cowgirls in seven innings of action while striking out five.
Mikkelson led the Cowgirls at the plate. She finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
"Advancing to the Regional final is awesome," said Gajewski. "Like I said, it's what we've wanted as a coaching staff for these kids. I told them winning is not easy. We've talked about that from day one. From my history of where I've been and where I've come from, I know the stakes.
"I know how hard this is. I know how hard Georgia has worked to get themselves into this spot. Northwestern, you have to tip your caps to them. This is some great softball games and I'm just glad these kids are playing their best softball at the right time. That's what we've talked about. The teams that advance in these things are the teams who play the very best at the very end. For us as a program, absolutely thrilled. These kids just keep kicking down doors and jumping over hurdles. It's just a fun time to be with this group and I just don't want it to end."
