May 19, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
IRVING, Texas –Three-time conference champion Cerake Geberkidane has been named Big 12 Track and Field Freshman of the Year, the conference announced Thursday.
Geberkidane won the 10,000-and 5,000-meter Big 12 titles in his first outdoor season as a Cowboy, and with his 13:51.79 in the 5,000-meter run from the Stanford Invitational back in April, Geberkidane secured a spot in the quarterfinal at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
His season began back in September, running with the Cowboy cross country team. Geberkidane led the Pokes to an unbeaten regular season, a ninth consecutive Cowboy Jamboree crown and an eighth consecutive Big 12 title.
During the indoor season, he scored 14 crucial points for OSU to help the Cowboys to their second indoor conference title in three years, including a 5,000-meter gold and a fifth-place finish in the historic 3,000-meter final, which saw five Cowboys finish in the top-six.
The Freshman of the Year will return to the track May 28 at 8:45 p.m. CT, in the 5,000-meter quarterfinal for a chance to extend his debut outdoor season and compete for a title in Eugene, Oregon.
