Oklahoma State Reaffirms Commitment To Equestrian
May 17, 2016 | Cowgirl Equestrian
STILLWATER - The Committee on Women's Athletics (CWA) recently voted on and approved a statement recommending that equestrian remain on the Emerging Sports list due to new organizational efforts, membership feedback, and potential growth.Â
Â
Led by 17th-year head coach Larry Sanchez, the Oklahoma State equestrian program has been a standout, winning five national titles and five Big 12 championships.
Â
"Equestrian is a good fit for our university and our athletic department, both now and as we move forward," Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder said. "Coach Sanchez has the program regularly competing for championships at the highest level and has done it with student-athletes who have consistently performed well in the classroom, which is very important to us. We are proud of what our equestrian program has accomplished and we look forward to what the future holds."
Â
The National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) in collaboration with the NCAA oversees the sport of Equestrian while under the Emerging Sports umbrella.Â
Â
In the fall of 2014, the CWA recommended that Equestrian be dropped from the Emerging Sports list due to the limited growth in the number of teams sponsoring Equestrian. Representatives from Division I and Division II rejected the CWA recommendation in support of maintaining participation opportunities for women. Multiple updates on the progress of the sport from the NCEA leadership offered a new perspective on Equestrian and convinced the CWA to reconsider its earlier action.Â
Â
"OSU is a natural fit for equestrian. We have a great marriage with our Animal Science program and its equine program," Sanchez said. "Stillwater has been my home for 17 years and I'm glad I get to continue to bring students from all over the country to OSU to take part in this incredible sport."
