Young, Cowgirls Earn All-Big 12 Honors
May 12, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State women's tennis took home numerous All-Big 12 honors after sweeping the Big 12 in both the regular and postseason, the league office announced on Thursday.
Chris Young was voted as the unanimous decision for Big 12 Coach of the Year after leading the Cowgirls to a 24-4 record and outscoring conference opponents 36-5 during Big 12 play. The recognition is the fourth-time that Young has won a coach of the year award, with this being his first at OSU since he arrived in 2009.
Three Cowgirls were named to the All-Big 12 first team for singles, as conference coaches selected Katarina Adamovic, Vladica Babic and Viktoriya Lushkova. OSU led the conference with three first team selections, while no other school had more than two.
The announcement marks the first time that the Cowgirls have had more than two members selected to the All-Big 12 teams for singles.
Adamovic has recorded 16 wins this year, including two wins against ranked opponents during conference play. The Cowgirl junior defeated Gabriela Talaba, ranked No. 100, in the final of the Big 12 Championship.
Babic's 14 wins in the spring earned her a spot on the first team and the sophomore has won her last five matches, including a pair of wins against ranked opponents. Babic has been a consistent contributor for the Cowgirls at the No. 2 position in singles.
Lushkova has continuously dominated opponents throughout the spring season, as she has only lost one time. Lushkova has won 12-straight matches since her last loss in February and 11 of those victories have been in straight sets.
Kelsey Laurente was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team after compiling a 15-4 record in the spring. The Cowgirl senior has won seven matches in a row, primarily playing at the No. 4 position in dual matches.
Three Cowgirl doubles pairings were named to the All-Big 12 Second Team, which marked the most All-Big 12 selections in a single season for the Cowgirls.
Adamovic and Babic made the second team after putting together a 23-1 record, including 15-straight victories.
Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari enter the NCAA Tennis Championship with a 23-3 record and have won their last two doubles matches.
Laurente and Maria Alvarez were named to the second team after winning eight matches in the spring while playing at the No. 1 position for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls host Albany in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championship on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
