Lynch Breaks School Record In Win Over Iowa State
April 08, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State freshman Taylor Lynch set a new Cowgirl's hitting streak record in a 10-2 run-rule victory over Iowa State in six innings at Cowgirl Stadium Friday night.
Lynch broke Shanel Scott's record that has stood since 2005 with her 18th-consecutive game with a hit. Lynch finished the game three-for-four with an RBI.
"It feels pretty great," Lynch said. "It can only go up from here. Still going with the see ball, hit ball thing because it seems to be working out for me so I'm going to keep doing that."
With the win, Oklahoma State (18-17 overall, 1-4 Big 12) snaps its five-game losing skid and recorded its first conference win under coach Kenny Gajewski.
"It's awesome," Gajewski said. "We needed this one bad. That's one of those where you'll remember it for a long time. But in our game it's short lived. We've got to get back out here tomorrow and try to get No. 2 so that's probably the most important thing"
Oklahoma State got off to the start it wanted with a Red Reasnor home run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead early.
Iowa State (15-20 overall, 0-4 Big 12) scored two in the top of the third, but Oklahoma State responded well with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. OSU had three-consecutive singles from its top three hitters in the lineup to regain the lead, 5-2.
The Cowgirls scored two more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-2 lead into the eventual final two innings.
Madi Sue Montgomery's double in the bottom of the sixth cleared the bases and gave the Cowgirls three runs in the inning, and completed the run-rule win.
Kacy Freeze (10-6) led the way for the Cowgirls in the circle. She went six innings, allowing just seven hits and two runs while striking out seven Cyclones.
"I actually didn't know (about the number of strikeouts)," Freeze said. "Until (Coach) told me after the game. I think what we were successful in was getting the lead out. What we noticed when we looked at the charts was I got four of the six lead outs and so when that first hitter comes up and we get her out that's momentum on our side."
Alongside Lynch, Oklahoma State also had a standout performance from Montgomery at the plate. She finished two-for-four with four RBIs to help lead the Cowgirls to victory. The first five hitters in the OSU lineup went 10-for-16 in the game with six RBIs and eight runs scored.
