Cowgirls Extend Win Streak To Five
April 03, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
WACO, Texas – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team wrapped up a perfect weekend in the state of Texas with a 4-1 victory against the No. 50 Baylor Bears at the Hurd Tennis Center on Sunday.
"I am really proud of the effort our girls gave today and throughout this week," head coach Chris Young said. "This team has improved greatly in the past month and I am excited to see how good we can become during the next few weeks."
The No. 17 Cowgirls (16-4; 4-0 Big 12) had not beaten the Bears since 2013. The last time the Cowgirls defeated Baylor in Waco was during the 2001 Big 12 Tournament.
"Baylor has been the standard in our league for the past decade and winning in Waco is never easy, so we will enjoy this one," Young said.
OSU began the match by taking the doubles point courtesy of victories from the No. 2 and 3 positions.
Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic kicked off doubles action for the Cowgirls. The tandem, ranked No. 45, took down Rhiann Newborn and Karina Traxler, 6-2. The win marked the fifth-straight victory for the Cowgirl duo.
A few seconds later, Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari secured the doubles point with a win against Kelley Anderson and Elizabeth Profit, 6-3. Lushkova and Tur Mari also picked up their fifth-straight doubles victory on Sunday.
Baylor evened the score at 1-1 in singles play after Blair Shankle defeated Adamovic, 6-0, 6-0.
The Cowgirls quickly responded as Babic cruised to a straight-set victory against Newborn, 6-2, 6-0. The sophomore, ranked No. 38, gave the Cowgirls a 2-1 lead over the Bears.
Lushkova gave the Cowgirls a commanding 3-1 lead with her win at the No. 2 position against Kiah Generette, 6-2, 6-2. The Cowgirl All-American, ranked No. 62, earned her sixth-straight victory, five of which have been in straight sets.
Tur Mari provided the clinching point for the Cowgirls at the No. 6 position in a straight-set victory against Traxler, 6-3, 6-4. Traxler double-faulted to secure the match for the Cowgirls. Tur Mari has won her last three matches, including a 2-0 mark over the weekend.
The Cowgirls will travel to Norman on April 9 for the second Bedlam meeting of the season against Oklahoma. OSU defeated the Sooners, 5-2, earlier this season in Stillwater.
