Track and Field Impresses Out West
April 02, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Friday was a big day for the Oklahoma State track and field team as several athletes claimed Big 12 leads in multiple events and All-American Chase Ealey added to her wins list at the Stanford Invitational.
"I think we had a really good day as a team," coach Dave Smith said. "We had some great races and a number of athletes ran well enough to get into the regional."
Under the lights at Cobb Track, Cerake Geberkidane ran a Big 12 best 13:51.79 in the 5,000-meter run.
Geberkidane was the 5,000-meter champion in the Big 12 during the indoor season, and is competing in his first outdoor season as a Cowboy after sitting out his freshman year in 2015. His time was the ninth best among collegiate athletes at the meet, and is the fifth best time in the West region so far.
"Cerake had a huge PR," Smith said. "He ran a good race, led most of the way but just got outkicked at the end."
Aurora Dybedokken smashed her personal best my more than one minute in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 16:03.72. Her time is the fifth-best in school history and is the fourth-fastest time in the West.
Ealey continued her hot streak Friday at Stanford with another fantastic outing in the shot put, this time winning the event by two feet.
She threw a 17.25m/56-7.25 foot mark to earn her second victory of the season. Ealey is one of only five women this season to produce throws of more than 17 meters, and the only woman to throw three marks of 17 meters or better in the 2016 outdoor season.
"She's an incredibly gifted athlete," Smith said. "When she's focused and confident, she can be dangerous. Every week she's getting better and better."
Freshman standouts Jacob Fincham-Dukes and Simon Imagbe made the trip to Palo Alto and both Cowboys put up their second-best jumps of the season.
"The two jumpers looked good out there," Smith said. "Jacob had a couple of big jumps that were small scratches, so we know there's a big one coming from him, soon."
For Fincham-Dukes, his leap of 7.43m/24-4.50 came within two inches of his season's best and second place at the Stanford Invitational, and Imagbe's 7.31m/23-11.75 tied his second-best jump of the year and gave him sixth place.
Savannah Camacho made her season debut in her home state of California and finished second in heat No. 2 of the 1,500-meter run with a personal best time of 4:17.56. It was just her first 1,500 of her Cowgirl career, but the decorated middle-distance runner's time is the third fastest in school history, and the best time in the conference this season.
"She ran a conservative race and closed well," Smith said. "She ran one of the better times in the country and qualified for the regional in her first 1,500, but she'll run the 800, too. I still think she's got a big PR coming in the 800."
Anna Boyert and Clara Nichols also ran in the 1,500. Nichols won section four in 4:23.90 and Boyert finished eighth in section three in 4:23.61.
On the men's side, Craig Nowak finished second in his heat of the 1,500, running a Big 12 leading 3:46.75 in his 2016 outdoor debut.
In the longest race of the night, Natalie Baker finished 18th in section two of the 10,000-meter run, and her time of 34:12.59 puts her at eighth in school history and is the fastest time by a Cowgirl since 2011.
Some Cowboy sprinters had double-duty in the Lone Star state, running at both the Texas Relays in Austin, and the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos on the campus of Texas State.
Sharod Selph's 10.80 at the Bobcat Invitational is the second fastest time of the year for the Cowboys and Arlando Brewer-Johnson's time of 10.95 would be fourth, but he currently leads OSU with a 10.68 from the Arkansas Spring Invitational.
The Cowboy 4X100-meter relay team ran a 41.52 in a loaded field at the Texas Relays that got the quartet 21st place. While the time does not replace their 40.60, which is currently 25th in the West, the Pokes have a chance to top Friday's time Saturday at the Bobcat Invitational.
Kaylee Dodd represents the Cowgirls at the Stanford Invitational and the Cowboy 4X100-meter squad returns to the track at the Bobcat Invitational Saturday to close out week three for OSU.
