The Fast Lane: Jennifer Celis and Arlando Brewer-Johnson

Jennifer Celis came to Oklahoma State from Hotchkiss, Colorado, last year and has since made a name for herself in the successful Cowgirl middle-distance squad.

In her first indoor season with OSU, Celis ran the fifth-fastest mile time in school history and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships where she finished 15th.

In that same season, Celis won a Big 12 title as a member of the distance medley relay team, and earned a second All-Big 12 honor with a third-place finish in the mile final.

This year, Celis anchored the Cowgirl DMR team to a repeat title and has the No. 14 time in the conference in the 800 so far this outdoor season.

While she missed the 2015 outdoor season with an injury, Celis is back on the track and one of the subjects of this week's Fast Lane.

Jennifer Celis:

Why did you choose track and field over other sports?

"During field days when I was growing up, the running events were my favorite events. A girl who became my best friend would always beat me. Then, when I was in seventh grade, my best friend at the time and her mother were runners, and decided to start a cross country team. I wasn't a part of the cross country team, and was kind of upset about it. So, I kind of snuck my way onto the team by sweet talking. I got on the team, but wasn't very good. That's how I got started. I also did track during my seventh grade year, and went from there."

What is your favorite thing about your hometown?

"I love that it's a small town and everyone knows everyone. When I go back home, I see a bunch of people that I know and we can talk about running and other things."

Do you have any pre-meet rituals?

"Not really. But, I always pray before a race."

Why did you choose Oklahoma State?

"I chose OSU because it felt like Dave and Mason, the people who recruited me, really valued me as an athlete. They felt like I could improve from where I was. My time's weren't super impressive in high school. Then, as soon as I met the team, I knew I would be around girls who were super competitive and friendly."

Aspen or Starbucks?

"I would pick Aspen."

Tulsa native Arlando Brewer-Johnson is a sprinter and long jumper for the Cowboys who already has NCAA Championship experience under his belt after just one full season in orange and black.

The sophomore Cowboy was a member of the All-American 4X100-meter relay team at last year's outdoor championships that came into the race with the eighth-fastest time in the West Region.

Brewer-Johnson also has two All-Big 12 honors, both in the long jump, from his eighth-place finish at the outdoor championships in 2015, and fifth-place jump from the Cowboys' title-winning campaign this indoor season.

Arlando Brewer-Johnson:

What is your favorite event to compete in?

"I would say the long jump. You get six attempts, so if you mess up on one try, there's another attempt. I also compete in the 100-meter dash, and you only have one shot. So, it's pretty stressful."

What is your favorite food?

"I'm pretty basic, so I would say a pepperoni pizza."

Why did you choose OSU?

"I'm originally from Tulsa, and I didn't want to leave the state. It was out of Tulsa, OSU and OU. I chose Oklahoma State mainly because of coach Diego. He was the main person recruiting me, and he was the most interested."

Who is your favorite athlete?

"I watch a lot of football, I would say my favorite athlete is Odell Beckham Jr., because I was a receiver in high school."

Who is the funniest person on the team?

"The funniest person, by far, is Brandon Singleton. He is the funniest guy you'll ever meet."
