Cowgirls Continue To Show Growth After Big 12 Sweep
April 11, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER ---- It was quite the weekend for Oklahoma State softball as the Cowgirls went 3-0 in a sweep over Iowa State at Cowgirl Stadium.
The performance was Oklahoma State's first conference sweep since 2012 when the Cowgirls swept the Cyclones in Stillwater.
Oklahoma State (20-17 overall, 3-4 Big 12) started the three-game series with a 10-2 run-rule win in six innings on Friday, and followed it up with a 12-10 win on Saturday. The Cowgirls completed the sweep with a 10-2 run-rule win in five innings on Sunday.
The team batted an incredible .455 on its way to scoring 32 runs while allowing only 14.
Freshmen Taylor Lynch and Madi Sue Montgomery led the way at the plate for the Cowgirls. Lynch finished the weekend batting .583 with seven hits and five RBIs. On Friday, she broke Shanel Scott's record for consecutive games with a hit that has stood since 2005 with her 18th-consecutive game with a hit, and extended her streak to 20 by the end of the weekend.
As for Montgomery, she finished batting .600 with six hits and a team-high 10 RBIs to help lead the Cowgirls through the sweep.
Kacy Freeze (11-6) led the way in the circle for Oklahoma State. The senior finished the weekend with a 2-0 record in 11 innings of work. She allowed just 11 hits and two walks while striking out 10 Cyclones.
Shea Coats was impressive as well in the circle. The junior finished 1-0 in 2.2 innings of work, allowing just one hit and walk while striking out four Cyclones to get the win on Saturday.
Under first-year coach Kenny Gajewski, the Cowgirls have continued to progress toward a bright future. With the sweep this weekend, Oklahoma State is now only one win away from matching last year's win total.
It's been a historic offensive season for the Cowgirls up to this point. With 216 RBIs, Oklahoma State has surpassed last season's total of 208. Oklahoma State has also hit 39 home runs this season, the fifth most all time and the most since the 2011 team that went to the College World Series finished with a program-high 47.
Another notable record that has fallen the year was the school-career home run record. Tiffany Mikkelson broke the record on Apr. 2 against Texas Tech with two home runs to bring her total to 33. She also broke the school's career walks record on Mar. 19 with No. 101 of her career. Mikkelson now needs just eight RBIs to break the school's career-RBI record of 163, which was set by Jaime Foutch in 1999.
Up next the Cowgirls head to Central Arkansas to take on the Bears.
First pitch from Conway, Ark., is set for 5 p.m. Further details on the game and how you can follow Oklahoma State can be found on okstate.com. The game will be live streamed for free, and the link can be accessed at okstate.com and the team's social media accounts.
