Former Cowboy Viljoen Dies at 62

STILLWATER – Former Big 8 champion and Oklahoma State Cowboy letter-winner Trevor Viljoen died Sunday at the age of 62.
Viljoen came to OSU after coach Ralph Tate recruited the talented distance specialist from Odessa College in Odessa, Texas, by way of Johannesburg, South Africa. He was a four-time letter-winner from 1974 to 1977.
He had his best year as a Cowboy in 1975 when he won the Big 8 indoor two-mile title and the three-mile Big 8 title during the outdoor season. Viljoen was the fourth and final three-mile champion in Cowboy history and his outdoor title helped the Cowboys to a fifth-place finish in 1975.
Viljoen graduated from OSU with a bachelor's and master's degree in engineering and worked for the Raytheon Corporation. During his employment, he earned a master's in systems engineering from Southern Methodist.
Viljoen is survived by his wife Karen; sons, Trevor Alan Viljoen II of Oklahoma City; Derek Viljoen of Edmond, Sasha Kakabadse of Chicago, Stephen Viljoen of Edmond; daughter Lauren Viljoen of Norman; sister Lorna Thome of Durban, South Africa; brother Brian of Pretoria, South Africa; and brother Mark of Aiken, South Carolina.
The service for Viljoen will be held March 16 at 2 p.m. at Strode Funeral Home in Stillwater.
