February 06, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – The No. 10 Oklahoma State women's tennis team bounced back on the second day of the ITA National Indoor Championship with a dominant 4-1 defeat of No. 13 Alabama, on Saturday.
"I am really proud of the girls for how they responded to a tough loss yesterday," coach Chris Young said. "Alabama is a great program, we knew that it would be a strong test and I am proud of the effort and attitude toward the match."
The win marked the first victory against a top-20 opponent for the Cowgirls (7-1; 0-0) this season. The Pokes improved to 5-1 against ranked opponents on the year.
"You learn a lot about your team in difficult moments and today we found out that we have a resilient group, who enjoys competing together and can move on quickly from a setback," Young said.
The Cowgirls have dominated the doubles portion of play so far this season, and the match against the Crimson Tide was no different.
Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic gave the Pokes an early advantage on court three. Adamovic and Babic had little trouble against Bennett Dunn and Aryn Greene, winning, 6-1.
A few moments later, the Pokes secured the doubles point on court two, courtesy of Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari. The juniors, ranked No. 23, defeated Danielle Spielmann and Joanna Nena Savva, 6-4.
OSU completed singles play in quick fashion with all three victories coming in straight sets.
Kelsey Laurente took down Spielmann, 6-1, 6-2, on court four to give the Cowgirls and early 2-0 lead.
On court three, Lushkova faced Nena Savva of the Crimson Tide. Lushkova, the reigning Big 12 Co-Player of the Year won, 6-3, 6-4.
The clincher came on court four from freshman Katarina Stresnakova. The newest Cowgirl took down Natalia Mayetto, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).
"We will have another strong opponent tomorrow and on the third day of the weekend our fitness will be tested," Young said. "I know our girls will be ready."
