February 07, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis squad lost a 4-3 heartbreaker against Miami in its final match of the ITA National Indoor Championship in Madison, Wisconsin, on Sunday.
The match marked the third top-20 opponent for the Cowgirls (7-2; 0-0 Big 12) in a three day span and the second straight match against an opponent ranked in the top-15.
"This tournament was a great gauge for our program of how we match up with the other programs in the country," coach Chris Young said. "This tournament will help us make improvements that will help us become stronger as the season progresses."
The Cowgirls got on the board early in the match by winning two of the three doubles matches to capture the first point of the day.
Miami won the doubles match on court one, as Stephanie Wagner and Wendy Zhang defeated No. 9-ranked Maria Alvarez and Kelsey Laurente, 6-2.
However, the Cowgirls responded by winning on the next two courts. On court two, Viktoriya Lushkova and Carla Tur Mari won a tough battle against Sinead Lohan and Clara Tanielian, 7-5.
Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic provided the deciding factor for the doubles point. The Cowgirl duo took down Silvia Fuentes and Clementina Riobueno, 6-4, on court three to give the Pokes a 1-0 lead.
The Cowgirls also got strong contributions early during the singles portion of play.
Lushkova was the first Cowgirl to finish in singles, giving OSU a 2-0 lead. The All-American recorded a straight set victory against Riobueno at the No. 3 position, 6-1, 6-1.
The Hurricanes managed to even the score at two after wins on courts one and two.
Carla Tur Mari soon put the Cowgirls back in the lead at the No. 6 position. The Spain native defeated Silvia Fuentes, 6-2, 6-4, giving the Cowgirls a 3-2 lead.
The two remaining matches were both three-set battles on courts four and five.
On court five, Katarina Stresnakova took the first against Tanielian before eventually falling, 6-4, 1-6, 0-6. The Hurricane win tied the match at three.
The final match of the day did not fail to provide drama. Laurente and Zhang were the third match to go three sets. Laurente battled to win the second set after falling in the first, but came up just short of giving the Cowgirls the victory.
The Cowgirls return to action on Feb. 12 as they hit the road to take on Arkansas.
