How We Got Here: Reining
February 05, 2016 | Cowgirl Equestrian
STILLWATER -- The Oklahoma State Equestrian team is currently ranked No. 5 by the NCEA in part because of the dominating shows in the Reining event. The Cowgirls are currently undefeated in Reining with a 5-0-1 record during the fall season.
Â
"I'm very happy with how the reiners have performed so far this season," Reining coach Jenna Blumer said. "I have a phenomenal group of girls so it's great to see their record reflect their talent and the hard work they put in every day."
Â
Senior Erin Willoughby remains undefeated on the season with six victories for the Cowgirls. The Murrieta, California, native posted a season-high score of 72 against TCU. This victory also brought her Most Outstanding Player honors.
Â
During the first three matches of the fall season, OSU won all three Reining events 4-1, 3-2 and 3-2. Willoughby and sophomore Ebba Lange were undefeated in all three matches.
Â
Lange has a 5-1 record on the season.
Â
Junior Brenna Brawner also grabbed MOP honors during the season opener against SMU. Brawner defeated SMU's Casey Bibbs with a season-high score of 72.5.
Â
After a 2-2 tie against Auburn, the Cowgirls dominated Baylor in the Western competition by a score of 8-2. OSU won the Reining event 4-1 as Lange took MOP honors with a 71.5-69.5 win over Baylor's Elizabeth Shank.
Â
In other 4-1 win over TCU, All-American Justine Peters, sophomore Julia Purus, Lange and Willoughby all won their head-to-head matchups to snag a match victory against the Horned Frogs 12-8.
Â
On the season, Purus is 4-2 with a high-score of 71. Danielle Cohen has also contributed for the Cowgirls with a high-score of 70.5."
Â
After missing much of her junior season to a neck injury, Peters has established herself once again as a commanding Reining rider for the Cowgirls. Peters holds a 4-2 record on the season. Her season-high score of 72 came in an impressive showing against then-No. 2 Auburn.
Â
"I am looking forward to seeing the girls grow even more as the season progresses," Blumer said. "That's what I love about this group. They are so competitive, yet remain humble and ambitious and work hard for each competition. I want to see them pick right back up on Saturday continuing their success and contribute to more total team wins in both the regular and post season."
Â
The Cowgirls look to continue their undefeated streak in Reining as they host the Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. at Totusek Arena in Stillwater.
