Oklahoma State Outdueled by No. 7 Oregon, 7-0
February 28, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – A complete game shutout from Oregon pitcher Megan Kleist halted the Oklahoma State softball team on Sunday, as the Cowgirls fell to the seventh-ranked Ducks, 7-0, at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
The Cowgirls and Ducks were locked in a 1-0 contest until the fourth inning, when Oregon broke the game open with a pair of home runs off of Oklahoma State starter Brandi Needham.
"Oregon is a great team and has a great program, and we just came up short today," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "It was a tough weekend against some really good competition. I talked to our team and told them that the first third of our season is done now, and now we can get back and reflect on how that's gone."
Oklahoma State led the Ducks in the hits column, 2-1, going into the fourth inning, thanks to infield singles from Vanessa Shippy and Taylor Lynch. With a single in the top of the third, Shippy extended her hitting streak to eight games, extending a season-high for the sophomore.
The second time through the Oregon lineup proved to be costly, as home runs from Koral Costa and Jenna Lilley marched the Ducks to a 5-0 lead after four innings of play. Shea Coats made her third appearance of the weekend when she came on in relief for Needham, and limited Oregon to a pair of runs over the final two innings.
Kleist retired 13 Cowgirls in a row to end the contest, leaving Oklahoma State with a 1-4 mark at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, including a victory over No. 9 Washington and narrow defeats against San Diego State and Cal State-Fullerton.
Oklahoma State will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to take on Arkansas on Wednesday before hosting its first 2016 game at Cowgirl Stadium on Friday, March 2.
"It'll be good to get in our own beds and in front of our own fans," Gajewski said. "I think our girls have been waiting for a long time to show off the new uniforms and the new fire they've got. I think there's a lot of energy, and they feel that."
Season tickets for the 2016 Cowgirl softball season are now available, starting at $50 for general admission seating and $75 for seats in the reserved lower level. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 877-ALL-4-OSU, at the OSU Athletics Ticket Office or online at http://okla.st/SoftballSeasonTickets-2016.
