Oklahoma State Softball Falls in 14-12 Shootout vs. San Diego State

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The Oklahoma State softball team went back-and-forth in an offensive shootout against San Diego State on Friday before eventually dropping a 14-12 decision at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
Oklahoma State held an 11-9 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth before allowing the Aztecs to put their first eight baserunners of the frame on base and notch a five-spot in the inning. The five-run inning for San Diego State was the turning point in a game that saw 26 runs, 26 hits and seven lead changes combined between both squads.
"We've just got to come back tomorrow and battle ourselves," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "That seems to be our biggest thing right now. We're our own worst enemy, and we've got to figure out a way to take that next step and get past that."
The Cowgirls didn't get started until around 11:30 p.m. CT due to a previous game running late, but the Cowgirls didn't waste any time getting the bats going. After falling down, 0-2, to start the contest, Vanessa Shippy fought back to work a walk and put the leadoff runner on for Oklahoma State.
A pair of infield singles from Taylor Lynch and Madi Sue Montgomery followed, allowing Tiffany Mikkelson to score Shippy with a fielder's choice groundout to short.
Cowgirl starter Kacy Freeze started in the circle after provided a pair of effective outings in Florida last weekend. However, the senior fell victim to three unearned runs in the bottom of the first, as San Diego State reeled off three hits and an RBI walk after third baseman Taylor Lynch committed an error to open the inning.
The seesaw battle took off from there, as Oklahoma State fired back with three runs of their own in the top of the second. After Randee O'Donnell led off with a bunt single, Miranda Cavin crushed a double to left-center, scoring O'Donnell and bringing OSU within a run.
The next two at-bats resulted in outs, but Madi Sue Montgomery knocked in Cavin and Lynch with a two-out double down the left field line, putting the Cowgirls back on top, 4-3.
Defensive miscues were a struggle for Oklahoma State throughout the night, as they again haunted the Cowgirls in the bottom of the second. An RBI single from Jenavee Peres knotted the score up at five, and Peres would go on to score in the following at-bat after O'Donnell misplayed a grounder to short.
With the Aztecs up, 5-4, the two squads shared scoreless frames in the third, but Oklahoma State roared back with a four-run top of the fourth thanks to an RBI double from Lynch, a run-scoring single from Red Reasnor, a sacrifice fly from Tiffany Mikkelson and a throwing error that allowed Maddi Holcomb to score.
After putting the leadoff runner on in the bottom of the fourth after Lynch's second error of the contest, San Diego State went on to tally four runs and take a 9-8 lead.
Still, the Cowgirls battled, as they scored three in the fifth via a fielder's choice groundout from Lynch, a bases-loaded walk from Reasnor and an error at third that allowed Shippy to score with two outs.
It turned out to be the final lead for Oklahoma State though, as the Aztecs used four-consecutive base-hits to go ahead, 14-11, in the sixth. After taking over for Freeze in the fourth, Brandi Needham shut down San Diego State for two frames, but eventually took the loss after being responsible for the Aztecs' five runs in the sixth.
Reasnor blasted a solo shot in the top of the seventh to keep the Cowgirls alive, but Alex Formby held on to navigate through the inning and put Oklahoma State away for good.
OSU's offensive output was arguably its best of the season, as the Cowgirls produced a season-high 13 base-hits. Taylor, Montgomery, Reasnor, Cavin and Shianne Hughes each finished with multi-hit performances, with Reasnor leading the way with a 3-for-4, three-RBI effort.
Oklahoma State will continue play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday, as it takes on No. 9 Washington at 7:30 p.m. CT and Cal State-Fullerton at 10 p.m. CT.
