PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Oklahoma State's men's golf team opened play at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Friday with a 300 total to stand alone in third place at Sawgrass Country Club.
The Cowboys' 12-over tally put them one shot off the pace of Jacksonville for second place at the par-72, 6,966-yard layout. North Florida opened with a 293 to stand atop the leaderboard.
OSU's Brendon Jelley shared the top spot in the individual race with North Florida's Phillip Knowles after carding an opening 70. The sophomore opened with a pair of pars before posting his two bogeys on the day at the third and fourth. However, Jelley quickly rallied with birdies at the fifth and sixth before eventually turning at even-par 36.
On his inward nine, he moved under par for the first time with a birdie at the 11th and added another at the 14th to get to his 2-under total.
Junior Zachary Olsen finished the day inside the top 20, posting a 75 to stand in a tie for 18th place.
Senior Jordan Niebrugge signed for a 77 to come in tied for 33rd place.
Junior Wyndham Clark and freshman Nick Heinen each carded 78s to stand in a tie for 46th place.
Freshman Zach Bauchou and sophomore Kristoffer Ventura are both competing individually in the event. Bauchou fired a 1-under 71 to come in a stroke off the lead and tied for third place, while Ventura posted a 77 to finish among the group tied for 33rd.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. (EST) and will be grouped with North Florida and Jacksonville.
