NEW ORLEANS – Freshman Chih-Min Chen's 3-under 69 led the Oklahoma State Cowgirls to a share of the lead after the opening round of the All-State Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.
Chen set the tone early in the day as she birdied four times on the front nine and added one more on the back. She also sits in a tie for second, just one stroke off the lead.
Not far behind was Linnea Johansson. The redshirt junior finished the round with a 1-under 71 while knocking down four birdies of her own. Johansson sits just outside the top ten at tied for 11th.
The Cowgirls ended the round with 18 birdies, which was the most by any team in the opening round.
"I saw a lot of girls who kept fighting until the end," said OSU head coach Courtney Jones. "I saw some nice puts go in the hole, and that's always what you want. But we just stayed patient. It's a golf course that you can have a lot of fun on and can be pretty aggressive. The greens are very receptive, and we had a couple girls get to par-fives in two (shots) and convert there, but I really just saw the girls staying patient and making some great shots."
Oklahoma State shares the clubhouse lead with Arizona and Stanford's Lauren Kim in the individual leader after her 4-under 68.
Maddie McCrary finished with a 1-over 71 in her first round of the spring season. McCrary closed her fall season finishing tied for fourth at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. She finished the day tied for 23rd.
Kenzie Neisen sits tied for 31st after a 2-over 74 and Isabella Deilert is tied for 51st with a 4-over 76.
The Cowgirls play the second round of the Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate on Monday.
