Stillwater, Okla.---- Jeff Newberry scored 16 points in a 71-61 loss to Texas Tech on Saturday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Newberry finished shooting four-of-seven from behind the arc.
Oklahoma State found itself in position to win after a slow start to the second half. A Tavarius Shine three cut the Texas Tech lead to 52-49 with 6:33 left.
Later in the half, a Leyton Hammonds three cut the lead back to eight and his layup the following possession cut the Tech lead to 60-54 with 2:55 left.
The Cowboys battled until the end, but Texas Tech hit the key shots needed to hang on for the win.Â
In the first half, Newberry got things going early. He scored five of the team's first eight points to give Oklahoma State an 8-6 lead with 16:47 left till halftime.
Four of the first five Cowboy field goals were from behind the arc and they held a 16-14 lead at the first media timeout with 13:02 remaining.
Hammonds found Newberry open in the corner later in the half, and Newberry's three tied the game at 21 at the third media timeout with 7:06 left.
Another Newberry three with 51 seconds remaining gave Oklahoma State a 29-26 lead, and the team went into halftime tied at 29.
The Cowboys finished the game with a season-low four turnovers and outscored the Red Raiders 9-2 in points off turnovers. The four turnovers were also the second fewest in a game in school history.Â
Toddrick Gotcher led the way for Texas Tech with 24 points.
Alongside Newberry, Oklahoma State also had a standout performance from Hammonds. He finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Hammonds has finished with double-figure scoring in seven of the last eight games.
