Martinez Named Scholar-Athlete of the Year
December 08, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced its 2016 Fall Scholar-Athletes of the Year Thursday, with Oklahoma State junior Luis Martinez sharing the honor for men's cross country.
Martinez was pivotal in the Cowboys' success during the 2016 cross country season, coming up big when it counted and mixing it up with some of the nation's best in the sport throughout the season.
He finished fifth at the Big 12 Championships to help the Pokes win their ninth-straight conference title. It was his first cross country all-conference honor, and third overall all-conference honor of his career.
Martinez performed in the classroom as well, earning a spot on the Academic All-Big 12 Team for a third time, and earning a 3.74 GPA while still participating in every meet during the season.
In total, the Big 12 named six Scholar Athletes of the Year from each of the five fall sports.
The Big 12 Conference established its Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 2012-13. A recipient is named in each conference-sponsored sports. Every Big 12 institution nominates one individual per sport with the winners selected by a vote of the league head coaches for that sport, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees must be a junior or senior (athletic and academic standing), have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, participate in at least 60 percent of the team's scheduled contests and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
