Averette Earns Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Honors

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State freshman point guard Brandon Averette excelled in his first start and earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday.

With last week's Big 12 Player of the Week, Jawun Evans, sidelined with an injury, Averette stepped in and led the Cowboys to a 71-67 win over the Golden Hurricane. In his first career start, Averette posted a game-high and career-high 17 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals in a game-high 37 minutes of action.

Averette hit a jumper with 4:14 remaining to cut the Tulsa lead to 1-point. On TU's ensuing possession, Averette poked the ball loose at mid-court, dove on the ball and called timeout to help swing momentum back to OSU's favor. Two minutes later, Averette hit another bucket to help cement the victory.

Averette and the Cowboys will return to Gallagher-Iba Arena to take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Wednesday night. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
