Cowgirls Knocked Out Of Big 12 Championship
November 03, 2016 | Cowgirl Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oklahoma State bowed out of the Big 12 Soccer Championship Wednesday night as No. 3-seed Baylor handed the sixth-seeded Cowgirls a 1-0 loss at Swope Soccer Village.
Â
A penalty kick goal in the 21st minute was the difference as OSU fell to 9-8-3 on the season. Baylor improved to 12-6-1 and moved into the tourney semifinals.
Â
Following a weather delay that resulted in the game kicking off two hours late, OSU fell behind at the 20:37 mark of the opening half. After a Baylor attacker was taken down in the box by a Cowgirl defender, the Bears were awarded a penalty kick. Aline De Lima stepped up and buried the attempt, with her fourth goal of the season giving BU a 1-0 advantage.
Â
OSU was limited offensively prior to intermission, managing just two shots, one of those a left-footed blast by Marlo Zoller in the 10th minute that was saved by BU goalie Sara Martinson.
Â
The second half saw the Cowgirls ramp up the attack in an attempt to record the equalizer, recording six shots, five of those on goal, and owning a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Â
One of those corner kicks nearly resulted in OSU finding the back of the net when Anna Beffer delivered a ball into the box that Christina Jean-Charles headed toward the near post. But Martinson tipped the ball up and then snagged it out of the air before it crossed the line to keep the shutout intact.
Â
Michela Ongaro kept OSU in it over the final 45 minutes as the Cowgirls' goalie racked up five saves on seven Baylor shots, including several of the highlight-reel variety.
