Cowgirls’ Season Ends In NCAA Tourney First Round
November 12, 2016 | Cowgirl Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. – Oklahoma State suffered a 3-1 loss to 16th-ranked Colorado Saturday at Prentup Field as the Cowgirls' season came to an end in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
OSU finishes the season with a 9-9-3 record, while the Buffaloes, who got a pair of own goals in the opening half and sealed the win with a late score, improved to 15-5-1.
Senior Courtney Dike netted the lone OSU goal, her 10th of the season, and finished her standout career fourth all time at OSU with 31 goals while ranking third in career points with 83.
The Buffs took an early lead in the 18th minute when on a long throw in by Danica Evans, the ball carried into the box but was headed into the net by an OSU defender to put Colorado up, 1-0.
Misfortune struck again in the 37th minute off another CU set piece when on a long free kick, the Cowgirls tried to clear the ball but instead headed it past goalie Michela Ongaro to give the Buffs a 2-0 advantage.
Trailing by two goals at the break, OSU ramped up its attack following intermission, and it paid off in the 53rd minute when Dike dribbled through the right side of the box and snuck a shot past CU goalie Jalen Tompkins from four-yards out.
Dike's score cut the Cowgirls' deficit to 2-1, but OSU could not find the equalizer despite recording six shots over the final 31 minutes.
OSU finished with 15 shots in the match, while the Buffs recorded 19, including one on which they scored with 12 seconds left when Evans beat Ongaro in a one-on-one opportunity.
Ongaro finished with eight saves in the match, one shy of her career high.
OSU is now 9-7-4 all time in the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship but has failed to advanced past the opening round in its last three trips.
