Cowboys Preview Bedlam, Pittsburgh
November 29, 2016 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Head coach John Smith and members of the Oklahoma State wrestling team met with the media on Tuesday afternoon to preview this weekend's matches against No. 16 Oklahoma and No. 21 Pittsburgh.

Â
On this weekend's matches:
"You always expect your guys to come up to another level, and with the performance last weekend, you just hope to see guys improve each week. We had that opportunity against a quality team like Minnesota last week, and we just want to see them improve. I don't know what that means in the score, but I know we'll have to wrestle well."
Â
On if Bedlam week has a different feel than other weeks:
"I think so. We had a late night getting back from Minnesota and not much of a practice yesterday, but I expect to see guys pretty excited about what we have coming up this weekend."
Â
On if having so many Oklahoma guys on the roster makes Bedlam more special:
"I think they're aware of it. It's one of those events that, and I say it every year, win or lose it isn't going to dictate the outcome of your season, but it's a heck of a lot better to win after coming home. Trust me. With Pittsburgh on Sunday, we'll have to wrestle well all weekend. There are some individuals that have some tough matches back to back, and we want to see how they perform."
Â
On the impact of Kaid Brock's pin of Oklahoma's Cody Brewer on last season:
"I think it created a lot of chemistry for the team, and it held through the year, even though Kaid was injured at the Southern Scuffle. I know I've been in this dual meet long enough that you don't take it for granted or look at who is favored over who. You always recognize that you can get into a match that you didn't expect. For that reason, you have to be prepared."
Â
R-Freshman Kaid Brock – 133 pounds
Â
On his memories of his first Bedlam when he pinned the defending national champion Cody Brewer:
"I remember going down and just wrestling. Everything happened fast last year, so it just kind of just came and went. It's a new year. I try not to think back to last year too much because it was on and off real quick."
Â
On what it meant to compete in Bedlam last season:
"It was nice. It was really fun. There's always a big crowd because it's Bedlam. Down there, it's a little more hostile, I like to say."
Â
On his memories of Bedlam duals:
"Coming here, Bedlam duals were always fun. They were really fun because we always won, which was the most fun part."
Â
On getting to wrestle his first match in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Sunday:
"That's what I'm excited for. I've gotten to wrestle at a Bedlam, I've gotten to wrestle at a tournament, and I've gotten to go on an away trip, but I've never wrestled at home. I'm excited about it."
Â
Senior Austin Schafer - Heavyweight
Â
On his upset of No. 5 Michael Kroells in the Cowboys' win over Minnesota:
"It always feels good to win a big match like that, but I've got to have a short-term memory. We've got some big duals this weekend, so I've got to get ready for that."
Â
On what Bedlam means to him, being a native Oklahoman:
"I grew up an OSU fan, coming to OSU duals as a kid, so it's pretty deep-seeded in me. It's always a lot of fun to get out there and let it fly."
Â
On if this Bedlam has more meaning for him with it being his final season:
"Yeah, I've had a bit of a bad taste in my mouth in the past with Bedlam, so it will be good to go out there and give it all I've got."
Â
On going into Bedlam with so many native Oklahomans in the lineup:
"I've noticed that a lot of us have grown up watching OSU and OU wrestling, and a lot of us watched all of our coaches wrestle in Bedlam growing up. It's kind of a cool feeling now that we're the ones that are out there when we grew up watching. It's kind of a cool experience."
