Cowgirls Battle Kansas To Draw
October 09, 2016 | Cowgirl Soccer
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Oklahoma State extended its unbeaten streak to three Sunday as the Cowgirls picked up a 1-1 tie against Kansas at Rock Chalk Park.
Â
With Sunday's result, OSU is now 7-5-3 overall and 2-2-1 in Big 12 Conference play, while the Jayhawks are 8-4-3 and 3-1-1 in the league.
Â
"We know how hard it is to get good results on the road so I was pleased with the girls' performance – we were real gritty, we were tough, we were resilient," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "We didn't play as well as we wanted to, but I can't fault the girls' effort – their mentality was really good."
Â
Sunday's match was marked by physical play as the two teams were whistled for a combined 43 fouls, and eight yellow cards were issued.
Â
For the second-straight match, OSU took the initial lead in the fifth minute. Courtney Dike made a move to beat a Jayhawk defender, then delivered her conference-leading eighth goal of the season past KU goalie Maddie Dobyns to put the visitors up, 1-0.
Â
The goal was the 29th of Dike's career, which ranks fifth in OSU history, and the senior forward is also fifth all time in points (78) and assists (20).
Â
Dike's score held up throughout the remainder of the first half, but Kansas would record the equalizer in the 51st minute. After a shot by Katie McClure hit the near post, Grace Hagan collected the ball and tapped it in to tie things at 1-1.                                                                                                       Â
Â
KU controlled the attack throughout the majority of the second half, recording 13 of its 22 shots in the second 45 minutes, but OSU goalie Michela Ongaro and the Cowgirls' defense made plays to keep the home team off the scoreboard.
Â
Ongaro finished with eight saves, one shy of her career high, including a diving deflection of a KU blast off the foot of Hanna Kallmaier from six-yards out in the 85th minute. The junior also had a game-preserving save with 3:46 remaining in the second overtime.
Â
"Today (Ongaro) helped us get a point on the road," Carmichael said. "She made two or three really nice saves to keep us in it… For her to step up there, she was a big factor in us getting a positive result."
Â
Despite its chances being limited after intermission – OSU finished with just six shots over the final three periods – the Cowgirls nearly converted a golden goal in the 95th minute. Haley Woodard got behind the KU defense, but her attempt was saved by a charging Dobyns to prolong the match.
