October 28, 2016 | Cowgirl Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Oklahoma State concluded the regular season Friday night with a 3-0 loss to No. 1 West Virginia in front of 2,048 fans at Dick Dlesk Stadium.
Â
The Cowgirls are now 9-7-3 overall and finished tied for fifth in the Big 12 Conference standings with a 3-4-1 mark. OSU will be the No. 6 seed at next week's Big 12 Soccer Championship in Kansas City, Mo., and will face third-seeded Baylor Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Swope Soccer Village.
Â
Friday's match at West Virginia saw the five-time defending Big 12 champion Mountaineers (16-1-1, 8-0-0) control the attack throughout.
Â
In the opening half, OSU goalie Michela Ongaro and the Cowgirl defense rose to the occasion as they were forced to defend 15 shots by WVU but kept the home team off the scoreboard.
Â
However, the Mountaineers finally broke the scoreless streak just 3:48 into the second half. Off a corner kick, Carla Portillo delivered a ball into the box that Michaela Abam headed towards the far post where Sh'Nia Gordon flicked it in to give WVU a 1-0 advantage.
Â
In the 56th minute, OSU recorded its first shot of the match, but Natalie Calhoun's header was just wide of the mark and couldn't produce the equalizer.
Â
Still down 1-0 in the 70th minute, OSU produced its lone shot on goal when Marlo Zoller delivered a low shot from 20-yards out that WVU goalie Rylee Foster scooped up.
Â
WVU would capitalize on two more scoring chances, getting a goal from Grace Cutler in the 76th minute before Ashley Woolpert found the back of the net on a free kick from 25-yards out in the 81st minute to make it 3-0.
Â
The Mountaineers, who did not allow a single goal in Big 12 Conference play this season, finished with a 26-4 advantage in shots while owning an 8-2 edge on corner kicks.
Â
Ongaro finished with six saves, notching three in each half.
