Late Goal Lifts Cowgirls To Win In Home Finale
October 25, 2016 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER – Julia Lenhardt's goal with just over three minutes remaining in regulation lifted Oklahoma State to a 1-0 win over Little Rock in the final regular season game at Cowgirl Stadium Tuesday night.
Â
With the victory, OSU improved to 9-6-3 heading into Friday's regular season finale at top-ranked and Big 12 Conference champion West Virginia. Kickoff for that contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CST).
Â
OSU controlled the majority of play against the Trojans (11-7-1) Tuesday night, but the Cowgirls struggled to put the ball in the net until Lenhardt's late heroics.
Â
In the opening half, the Cowgirls did not allow a single shot by the visitors while they recorded six, three of those on goal.
Â
The second half resulted in much of the same until late in the match, and it was nearly the Trojans who broke the scoreless drought first.
Â
In the 83rd minute, a long throw in sent the ball into the box where Fali Garuba headed it off the crossbar on what was one of only four shots by Little Rock on the night.
Â
After dodging the bullet, the Cowgirls finally got into the scoring column at the 86:54 mark when the Big 12's leading scorer Courtney Dike, sent a pass to Lenhardt, with the freshman midfielder delivering a shot from the corner of the box to the far post for her third goal of the season.
Â
The goal would hold up as Little Rock managed but one shot the rest of the way, and OSU held on for the shutout, which marked the fourth of the season for goalie Michela Ongaro.
Â
OSU finished with a 13-4 advantage in shots and owned a 6-1 edge on corner kicks.
